German term or phrase: bleibt bestehen
I can't untangle the syntax of this sentence. What does the singular verb "bleibt" go with?

"Erste Untersuchungen mit sozial ängstlichen Kindern und Jugendlichen erbringen folgende Ergebnisse: In der X Studie bleibt retrospektiven Aussagen zufolge die soziale Angst bzw. das Vermeidungsverhalten bei mehr als einem Viertel der Jugendlichen über Monate bis Jahre bestehen."

My draft is something like this:
"Initial studies with socially anxious children and adolescents yield the following results: In the X study, more than a quarter of the adolescents were still making retrospective statements about social anxiety or avoidance behavior for months or years."

I don't think this is right. Since it's a retrospective study (I guess), the statements would be about things that happened months or years before the present. This point is not elaborated; the document goes on to discuss other research by other scientists.

Thanks in advance!
