German to English translations [PRO]
Social Sciences - Psychology / Bereich, auf den ein Individuum Rücksicht nehmen soll
German term or phrase: Landsmannschaft
In einer Tabelle werden verschiedene soziale Gruppen - vom Ego bis hin zur Menschheit - geschildert, auf die ein Individuum Rücksich nehmen soll. Zwischen "Clan" ("sozialem Mesokosmos") und "Nation" prangt "Landsmannschaft". Könnte man das mit "group of compatriots" wiedergeben?

compatriot association

Explanation:
Unless the term is used as another word for "nationality" compatriot association (/organisation in a broader context or /community in a city and/circle if it´s a smaller local group) may be a good solution. That´s how I would interprete it here .

agree  TonyTK: "Compatriot groups", perhaps. "Associations" sounds a bit too formal.

disagree  Cilian O'Tuama: so if you disagree with community (below), why suggest it?

neutral  Yorkshireman: Your disagreement was posted at 13 hrs - long after I posted further reference/details/suggestions - I care more about maintaining etiquette and fairness within the ProZ community than points.

-> `scuse me but I disagree, may I ? :-) - your original proposition wasn´t exact enough concerning Landmannschaft! Who cares about rating?! - No sensible being should!

community

Explanation:
An odd term, it generally means fraternity.

Indigenous or autochthonous community could also fit the bill if you wish to qualify the community as not including migrants.

I believe the development chain is something like:

family - clan - tribe - community - country - nation - empire

Ethnic group/ethnic community or simply *ethnicity* (the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition) could be other options

Another term that could be used is "a people".

By the way, the American native peoples - (American Indians) - call themselves nations, e.g. the Cherokee Nation, which are made up of tribes.

Etymology of community
http://www.documentroot.com/2004/04/etymology-of-word-commun...

"The word community is derived from from the Latin communitas, fellowship, which, in turn, is derived from communis, or "common".

The prefix "com" signifies "with, together, in conjunction, joint". Removing the "com" from the latin, leaves you with munis, which derives from munire, meaning "to fortify, strengthen, or defend".

AKA: Strength in numbers."

More definitions of "community"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community
"A community is a social unit of any size that shares common values."
"In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness."

agree  Lancashireman: A versatile word. In the British comprehensive school system of the 1990s, 'community languages' were Urdu, Punjabi etc whereas ''Community languages' were those spoken in the EC (European Community), e.g. French, German.

disagree  thefastshow: In the context given I believe community may be a bit misleading. Compatriot group would be much closer to Landmannschaft.A community could also consist of different nationalities (though not in Andrews context)
13 hrs
-> Should be neutral at the most - you yourself write community in a city

neutral  Cilian O'Tuama: I don't feel strongly either way, but thefastshow seems to be contradicting him/herself alright.
