Thanks, Ramey. It sounds a little odd in English (to a non-specialist), and I haven't found it yet in a Google Scholar search with "matrix," in a file that is not blocked to non-subscribers. I'll take another look after a break.

I copied the texts from two different pdf files that I found. IF task format is correct, then I would suggest:
The solution/answer cannot be arrived at by guessing or by comparing task format or answer sequence, allowing XXX....
I can imagine it

It's a description of the problem or situation, context information that is supposed to allow you to answer the question. The paragraph that comes before a list of multiple-choice answers. Of course I did research. I read the article you linked to and couldn't make any sense out of it. Still can't. "Man unterscheidet im wesentlichen zwei Formulierungsvarianten des Aufgabenstamms.
Aufgabenstamm als Frage: Alternativen als Antworten auf die Frage.
Aufgabenstamm als unvollständiger Satz, der durch jede Alternative vervollständigt wird."

You don't say whether you've done any research, but the first Google hit explains its meaning: http://psydok.sulb.uni-saarland.de/volltexte/2005/516/html/m...
You could possibly translate it as "question", even though it may not have a question mark at the end - it could also be a sentence with a word missing.
Raten means guessing, though I'm not sure about the rest of the text in asterisks.
