Social Sciences - Psychology / CBT for return to work
German term or phrase: Schutz- bzw. Schonungsverhalten
Patients are being reintegrated into the workplace after therapy for anxiety disorders or depression:

Sollte darauf geachtet werden, dass Patienten, die zu einer Überforderung am Arbeitsplatz neigen und diesbezüglich z.B. angeleitet werden, sich abzugrenzen und einen angemessenen Ausgleich zwischen Be- und Entlastungen zu schaffen, kein allgemeines Schutz- bzw. Schonungsverhalten entwickeln, das die erfolgreiche Wiedereingliederung gefährden könnte [Linden und Strauß, 2012].

My draft:
It should be ensured that patients who tend to be overwhelmed at the workplace and who are therefore advised to set themselves apart and create a reasonable balance between burdening and unburdening themselves, do not develop a general protective and [??] behavior which could jeopardize their successful reintegration [Linden and Strauß, 2012].

There are several questionable parts of this sentence (!), but I'll limit it to one: I can't figure out what the difference might be between Schutzverhalten and Schonungsverhalten. Maybe there is none in English? Unfortunately the reference given there is behind a pay wall.

Thanks!

I think these terms can be separated, as your third reference has them (Victimology book), thereby matching the source text better. I am going to query the author on this one. Thanks Johanna for your reliably good advice, and thanks everybody else too!

self-protective and (inadequate] illness behavio(u)r

Explanation:
... or perhaps "self-protective behavio[u]r and avoidance"). "Evasiveness" also springs to mind.

(where "Abbau von Vermeidungs- und Schonungsverhalten" has been translated as "reduction of avoidance and inadequate illness behaviour").

I'm not entirely sure which terms to use but perhaps this will point you in the right direction.

techniques for protecting and looking after themselves

Explanation:
Basically this is about ensuring that people don't overdo things or work too hard - as the prevous part of the sentence says, you have to make sure that they find the right balance between stress and relaxation, and their recovery / return to work is at risk if they fail to do this. I don't see anything in this about avoidance or submission - it is just techniques for drawing appropriate boundaries and knowing when not to take on too much.

neutral  Paul Cohen: It says "kein allgemeines Schutz- bzw. Schonungsverhalten entwickeln", as they could jeopardize successful integration, whereas "techniques for protecting and looking after themselves" sounds to me like something healthy that should be cultivated.

self-protection and holding back

Explanation:
I think this phrase would be a good fit in our context as well:

"Without trusting relationships, exchanges would likely encourage self-protection and holding back, severely limiting the capacity for collaboration, learning and improved performance. People keep things to themselves, hoard ideas and are less likely to be helpful and open (Sergiovanni, 2005, p. 118)"

Looking around a bit, it seems worth mentioning that the whole point of this query, imo, is to draw a distinction between Schutzverhalten und Schonungsverhalten rather than just broadly lump them together.
