encumbrances/charges Explanation: As far as I'm aware, since the category is law here, the most correct term for Baulasten would indeed be encumbrances. As for "Lasten" by itself, I believe you can safely use "charges" and you would be correct, while also making a difference between the two terms. |

Reference: Charges (Land Registry) & Encumbrances Reference information: Charges seems reasonable for 'Lasten' as indicated by other responses. And 'encumbrances' for 'Baulasten'. They incorporate a whole raft of debts or liabilities registered against a property. In the UK information on charges can be found at the Land Registry. Encumbrances are obligations or liabilities attached to a property. Property may be bought or sold even though there are encumbrances attached to it. Encumbrances are attached to the property and not to the property owners and therefore a person who buys property with the encumbrance is bound to the encumbrance. Easement is a specific type of 'encumbrance' relating to rights of way in UK. No vote for 'burdens' from me either. I attach a link to a property jargon buster.
