The problem is obviously down to ever increasing levels of competition. Penny's explanation of supply exceeding demand is spot on, and it literally means that too much floor space is being devoted to the same items in the various retail outlets.

A forum discussion on www.leo.org also yieldeed surplus acreage, and while the acreage is clearly not right in this context, there might be some mileage in surplus
