German term or phrase: Nachnutzung zugeführt werden
2012 konnte Gerry Weber für die Innenstadt gewonnen werden, ebenso konnten mit Unterstützung der Stadt die Schlecker-Flächen der Innenstadt einer attraktiven Nachnutzung zugeführt werden.

I am not sure how to phrase this correctly.

With the support of the town, the Schlecker stores in the town centre were able to be ........

This is where I come stuck.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly welcomed

Thanks in advance.

used for other purposes

Explanation:
Other uses were found for them subsequent to their closing down as Schlecker shops.

Maybe "...it was possible to find attractive alternative uses for the previous Schlecker sites"?

-> Andrew, the heading didn't allow so many characters, so it was merely a précis of the meaning.

town found an interesting and productive alternative use for these premises

Explanation:

You need to turn it around, do not start with Schlecker Store. In English usually it´s the actor first

could be put to attractive new use

Explanation:
Example from link below:

"Such houses could be put to attractive and good use by those whom we wish to encourage to visit the Province."

Make that past tense, of course:
"..were able to be put to attractive new use.."

3 hrs
-> Yep, forgot it was past tense but asker already knows how to handle that..

neutral  Lancashireman: "to be able to be"? Sorry, but we try to avoid this clumsy construction in English any way we can (see above). // How can buildings - or any other inanimate object - 'be able' to do anything for themselves?
5 hrs
-> I said "were able to be put to attractive new use" Who's we?
