Calligrapher / calligraphist Explanation: Schriftmaler is somebody who knowes to paint / write decorative characters. In almost every language one can find calligraphists, famous are the arabs for it. Take a look on wikipedia. The time you've mentioned was a time when it was still very expensive to buy printed books and because of that there were still calligraphists working. On books and on signs. Good luck.
