German term or phrase: produktiv-kritisch
This is from a text on artificial intelligence and its effects on mankind.
I am puzzled by what is meant by "produktiv-kritisch", especially the produktiv bit.

Thanks for any insight!

It would be impossible or impractical to try to translate each word and then string them together. Suggested starting point:
The notion of a "Bewusstseinsindustrie" was formed as a critical response to the highly productive manipulation of mass media and consumer culture during the 1950-70s.

Critical theory is a social theory oriented toward critiquing and changing society as a whole, in contrast to traditional theory oriented only to understanding or explaining it. Critical theories aim to dig beneath the surface of social life and uncover the assumptions that keep us from a full and true understanding of how the world works.
Critical theory emerged out of the Marxist tradition and it was developed by a group of sociologists at the University of Frankfurt in Germany who referred to themselves as The Frankfurt School.

Edit: Productiveness-critical...
meaning an Absicht that is criticizing of productiveness.

That's the only thing that makes sense to me. If the author is being more creative, they probably prepared you earlier in the text.

I'm not familiar with it, but Visuelle Kommunikation; Beiträge zur Kritik der Bewusstseinsindustrie was important enough to make it to the list:
