"nationalist" 10:05 May 20, 2020
I have trouble understanding the earlier discussion entries from Chris Pr and Phil Goddard. Chris appears to make a distinction between 'patriotic' and 'political', as if one can somehow be patriotic without being political. Patriotism (and racism) are very clearly political phenomena. During the Third Reich it was important to establish one's credentials as regards commitment to the German Volk (people/nation/race), if one's conscience allowed one to do that. The difficulty which I have with the word "nationalist" is that it has different connotations in different contexts. Although I have both British and German citizenship, I do not consider myself to be a British, English, or German nationalist. If I were living in Nazi Germany, I hope I would have the courage to stand up against the nationalism of the Nazi regime. Thank God, a few people (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Niemoeller, Franz Jägerstätter and others) did demonstrate such courage. On the other hand, if I were living in Wales, Scotland or Ireland, I would be supportive of Welsh, Scottish or Irish nationalism, so long as there is a clear commitment to nonviolence and a renunciation of hatred and violence. |
