German term or phrase: Modedenker
The word "Modedenker" comes up in a translation I'm working on (as distinct from "Modeschöpfer"). I mean, obviously I understand the difference between 'Denker' and 'Schöpfer' but I'm having trouble finding English equivalents that would convey the difference between these two... off the bat, I'd translate both as 'fashion designer' ('fashion thinker', I guess, but it sounds strange). Is 'Modedenker' a fairly conventional word or rather unusual?

Thanks, yes I think I'll go with this. Although visionary seems to be going a bit further than "denker", this conveys the general meaning and certainly sounds much better!

Expressions suggesting intellectual interest and capacity would work. Fashionista wouldn't work because you wouldn't be able to rule out that their interest or knowledge is only skin-deep.

Asker: Thanks, I think this could work in some cases (although 'conceptual fashion designer' sounds more natural to me than 'fashion conceptualist').. but the designer in question (Uli Richter) does not seem to be particularly 'conceptual'
