German term or phrase: Schwitzkabine
This term appears in a wellness text I am translating. I imagine that a 'Schwitzkabine' has a similar function to a sauna.

I think it is referring to the actual cabin, but you could probably just use "sauna" depending on the context.

infrared sauna

Explanation:
I could well imagine that this is what is meant (see my two links) - gentler than a conventional sauna

steam room

Explanation:
Germans tend to use the word "sauna" frequently, so I would suggest this is a slightly different thing (just finished a long hotel and "Wellness" project)

A "steam room" (as opposed to a steam bath) has a higher humidity and causes you to sweat more. This would seem to make it a more likely solution.

see the rather wonderfully titled "Miracles of sweating" section on the Di Vapor website (who also differentiate between sauna and steam room)

This German thread seems to go along the same lines:

http://www.fitness.leitfaden.net/sauna.html

There also often seems to be a differentiation between "Wärmekabine" (dry heat) and "Schwitzkabine" (humid heat), although I am prepared to admit that it seems that sometimes all these terms are used interchangeably (whether that is actually correct or not).

agree  Inge Luus: A sauna and a steam room are definitely two different kinds of rooms. At our gym we have both. The steam room uses humid heat and the sauna dry heat.

agree  jccantrell: I always called the steam room a "Turkish bath" at my gym long ago and far away. Difference is in the humidity.

neutral  RegineMac: What you are referring to is a Dampfbad. Check out http://www.siegen.de/standard/page.sys/details/eintrag_id=76...
