German term or phrase: Entwertung
What term would you use to describe the first usage of a day ticket for a bus or train which is then valid until 3 a.m. I have no idea if the ticket is in paper or other form and how exactly it would be "entwertet", ie by a conductor ripping it or putting a ticket into a machine as you would at the S-Bahn. Presumably, this ticket could be bought in advance to use at a later date, hence "Entwertung" rather than purchase.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks very much for your help David, but I have had to go with Veronica as it is possible that the ticket is torn rather than stamped in some instances - the ferry is a most likely example - but I went with the "valid from time of validation" (your suggestion) but I can't split the points. Sorry.

Reference information:
"In many countries where trains and urban transport tickets operate largely on the honor system (with enforcement by roving inspectors or conductors), there are also machines in stations (or in vehicles) just for validating tickets. This is for the situation where one buys a ticket in advance and decides to use it later. Usually, the ticket is time-stamped to determine its validity period. A common problem is forgetting to validate and then being fined as if one had no ticket at all."
