Wegbeschreibung

agree  Coqueiro: agree, as they (sic, plural) are not planted and cultured but natural phenomenons

agree  Berit Kostka, PhD: I'm with Coqueiro on this one as from the context it sounds like naturally grown cathedral-like spaces underneath the trees. Planted structures, called "tree cathedrals", also exist though.

majestic domes of trees

Explanation:
Another option. I also thought of 'sanctuaries of trees' but the passage looks like the author may have chosen 'cathedrals' because it has an imposing ring to it.

Perhaps, 'canopies of trees' might also work in this context.

neutral  Armorel Young: I think a "tree cathedral" is usually an avenue of trees with spreading branches that almost form a roof - "domes" conjures up a completely different image.

-> Correct. Just realized that. My bad.

-> Thanks. I take it, that's a comment on 'sanctuaries'?

arboreal cathedrals

Explanation:
"Along streets and on the green the trees rose to leafy loggia, arboreal cathedrals softening the effects of urban growth."

"Woodland is a far too mundane description for the atmospheric arboreal cathedrals that have hosted the summer visits of these enigmatic birds ..."
