I picconi del relè costituiscono gli interruttori o gli scambi, il cui stato (aperto o chiuso) dipende dall'eccitazione dell'elettromagnete. Ad esempio, un relè con due contatti può funzionare come interruttore, mentre un relè con tre contatti può funzionare come commutatore. Per ciascun interruttore o commutatore sono presenti un contatto mobile e, rispettivamente, uno o due contatti fissi.
