Im Reformer entsteht neben dem Holzgas Holzkohle. Sie besteht hauptsächlich aus dem vollständig umgesetzten Kohlenstoff des Holzes. Durch möglichst wenige Rostbewegungen kann ihr Anfall generell minimiert werden. Als Kohle hat sie für nachfolgende Prozesse auch eine wichtige Funktion zu erfüllen. Sie hält Kalium und Calcium zurück um Motorschäden auszuschließen. Sie ist ein Filtermittel, welches sich neben den genannten Stoffen auch mit Phenolen, Benzole bzw. PAK (Polyzyklischen Kohlenwasserstoffen) sowie Schwermetallen anreichert. Dies setzt ihrer Weiterverwendung in Anlagennähe oder durch Abnehmer Grenzen. So werden Grenzwerte für die Verwertung in der Landwirtschaft überschritten und sind Zusatzmaßnahmen zur Abgabe an stoffliche Nutzer nötig. Um die Beladung der Kohle weiter zu reduzieren und die Energie der flüchtigen Bestandteile dem Prozess zurückzuführen, gelangt sie bei der Standardausführung der **Holz-Kraft-Anlage** direkt in den Nachreformer.
