Groß war das Staunen der Mönche des Franziskanerordens in England und Deutschland um 1200, als sie die Kraft des *Lesesteins* – technisch auch als Plankonvexlinsen in Überhalbkugelform bezeichnet – entdeckten. Alterssichtigen Brüdern wurde mit Hilfe der aus Bergkristall oder Beryll – aus dem sich der Begriff Brille ableitet - gefertigten Steine bzw. Linsen das Lesen und Leben erleichtert.
