In una chiatta che navigava sul Reno nel XII secolo:

Plötzlich begann das Boot zu schlingern, geistesgegenwärtig klammerte sie sich an die ***Seitenplanke***

Può trattarsi di una panca? Qualche riga più sopra il bordo della chiatta viene chiamato "schmale Brüstung", quindi non credo che Seitenplanke sia un parapetto. Oppure sì? Non trovo una descrizione dei vari elementi delle chiatte, neanche di quelle moderne...
