In der Neuen Musik der Wiener Schule wurde dieses Fundament nach und nach endgültig verlassen – Schönberg lehnte freilich den Begriff „atonal“ ab, so dass eher von a-tonikal zu sprechen wäre – und schließlich mit der Dodekaphonie ein alternatives Ordnungssystem gefunden.

Der Begriff wurde anfänglich in polemischer Absicht von der konservativen Musikkritik auf die Kompositionen der Wiener Schule, insbesondere auf Arnold Schönbergs Drei Klavierstücke op.11 (1909), angewandt und war ursprünglich mehr ein Schlagwort als ein musiktheoretischer Terminus. Sowohl Schönberg[1] als auch Alban Berg lehnten diesen Begriff ab, weil sie ihn im Sinne von "ohne Töne" (statt "ohne Tonart") verstanden.[2] (u. A. in dem Radiodialog Was ist atonal?[3] von 1930).
