Die Insekten steuern diese Pflanzen besonders gerne an. Das Teilverbot der sogenannten Neonicotinoide, die für Bienen gefährlich sein könnten, wird auf zunächst zwei Jahre befristet. Umweltschützer begrüßten den Beschluss.

In der Landwirtschaft werden die Pestizide genutzt, um Saatmittel zu beizen. Mais wird so etwa vor dem Schädling Maiswurzelbohrer geschützt. Dies soll den Einsatz von Spritzmitteln reduzieren. Die Pestizide stehen im Verdacht, das seit langem beobachtete Bienensterben mit zu verursachen. Sie schädigen offenbar den Orientierungssinn der Bienen.
