Verfilmungen von Opern werden oft als Filmopern bezeichnet, wobei zu unterscheiden ist die Dokumentation von Aufführungen von der tatsächlichen Verfilmung, also der filmischen Adaption einer Oper. Als erste Filmoper wird gemeinhin eine zweiminütige Version von Donizettis Die Regimentstochter bezeichnet, die 1898 in New York erstaufgeführt wurde. Der meistverfilmte Opernstoff ist Carmen mit mehr als 60 filmischen Adaptionen, die meist auf der Oper, manchmal aber auch auf der literarischen Vorlage von Prosper Mérimée basieren.
