Veo "compuerta" ok, como muestran las fotos en wikipedia. Sin embargo, yo diría que los barcos tienen "proa" y las locomotoras, como los aviones (y algunas personas, lol), tienen "morro". Antes que "compuerta de morro", creo mejor tomar la traducción del inglés "front hatch" (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Bugklappe_ICE1.jpg) y decir "compuerta frontal/delantera", mucho más elegante y, en cualquier caso, bastante claro.

Concuerdo con tu observación. No conviene usar un término demasiado técnico porque se pierde el efecto cómico de insertar un cigarrillo en el "morro", "trompa" o "nariz" de la locomotora.
