Thank you. Points to this answer as the first. This is certainly better than "diachronic museum". Perhaps it's possible, in some contexts, to talk about a museum which is arranged diachronically. Thanks to everyone who commented.

The Museum in Thiva is the "Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο". Vickys comment about the exhibits is right. These days it is closed and there will be a new "διαχρονικη"? exhibition in the future.

...and I have taken groups of tourists through the vast majority of them in Greece, and what they actually exhibit is the development of the discovered (therefore available) artefacts in their area. Historical Museums are a different concept altogether.

are these museums illustrating the history of particular places, in terms of battles, events? Or are they primarily art museums, showing the art/artefacts of various periods?

This ex-tour guide thinks it falls under the 'Aw my Gawd' category. It may mean that the museum exhibits span a number of centuries; or that the museum will be around for ages. :-)
