We usually call μαθήματα (in this context) subjects, in English. The Oxford Greek to English dictionary gives the alternative meanings of μάθημα to be (1) lesson, homework; (2) class [as in, when does the next class begin?]; (3) Subject [as in, history is my favourite subject].

Sifting through the study of Educational Systems in various Countries,
I have not come across the Greek phrase, Μαθήματα Γενικής Ωφελιμότητας=Subjects of general benefit (or usefulness), which, with due respects to Peter, is a translation of the greek term.

In this thesis, even in Education in Greece, there is no such reference, apart from common term of , 'General Education', with such a variety of systems and interpretations in different Countries.
Wikipedia suggests 'Humanities', which includes 'Social Sciences'.
The English version of the Greek educational System, of Lykeion and Gymnasion, in the London School of Economics thesis, does not translate 'Μαθήματα γενικής ωφελιμότητας = Subjects of general benefit (or usefulness)'
