Greek term or phrase: σύμβαση εξαρτημένης εργασίας
The issue here is whether the terms of employment constitute a σύμβαση εξαρτημένης εργασίας or simply represent a σύμβαση για την παροχή ανεξαρτήτων υπηρεσίων. In other words does the person engaged have a contract of employment or are they self-employed ? However, I am not sure that there is a precise equivalent in English employment legislation for εξαρτημένη εργασία. I think we just talk about a 'contract of employment'. Does anyone know?

SUBORDINATION

Concept which is the distinguishing feature of work to which labour law is applicable. In accordance with Greek case law, work done in a position of "subordination" under a συμβαση εξαρτημενηζ εργασιαζ(i.e. the contract of employment as a contract of service in contrast to a contract for services ), to which the provisions of labour legislation apply, is interpreted as the situation where the employee is obliged to perform the contractually agreed work subject to the employer's instructions concerning the place, time and manner of this performance and where the employer is entitled to carry out supervision and control to ascertain the employee's compliance.

Reference: contract of employment, employment contract

Reference information:
The relevant articles of the Civil Code are 648-680 on σύμβαση εργασίας. In Introduction to Greek Law (p.89), Christodoulou writes that in these articles “both the contract for independent services and the contract for dependent employment are regulated in detail”. Funnily enough, “εξαρτημένη εργασία” does not come up anywhere in these articles. It is, however, the term to use if you go for word-for-word translation.

On the other hand, contract for dependent work is exactly the same as an employment contract. In Wikipedia, for instance:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Employment_contract
... Put generally, the contract of employment denotes a relationship of economic dependence and social subordination...
A contract of employment is usually defined to mean the same as a “contract of service”. A contract of service has historically been distinguished from a “contract for services”, the expression altered to imply the dividing line between a person who is “employed” and someone who is “self employed”.

That’s all there is to it.
