Την ίδια περίοδο, στην προεκλογική εκστρατεία της η αντιπολιτευόμενη παράταξη της Νέας Δημοκρατίας έκανε λόγο για πρώτη φορά για απελευθέρωση των ερτζιανών συχνοτήτων σε περίπτωση εκλογικής της νίκης , που πραγματοποιήθηκε λίγο καιρό αργότερα. Η απορρύθμιση στο ελληνικό τηλεοπτικό πεδίο όμως δεν πραγματοποιήηκε τόσο απλά. Χρειάστηκε να γίνουν πολλές διαμαρτυρίες, ακόμα και με τη μορφη τηλεπειρατείας στα δημόσια κανάλια κατά τις νυχτερινές ώρες, να ιδρυθούν παράνομα οι πρώτοι ιδιωτικοι τηλεοπτικοί σταθμοί και, εν τω μεταξύ, η κυβέρνηση να «χρυσώσει το χάπι» του κόσμου με την ίδρυση της ΕΡΤ3, ενός κρατικού τηλεοπτικού καναλιού για τη Βόρεια Ελλάδα.
