Στις θεωρίες σχετικά με την αγορά και το προϊόν , μια πλευρά οικονομολόγων των ΜΜΕ υποστηρίζει ότι σε ολιγοπωλιστικής δομής αγορές, όπου λίγες εταιρείες ελέγχουν σημαντικό μερίδιο της αγοράς, υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη δυνατότητα καινοτομίας και, συνεπώς μεγαλύτερη ποικιλία προϊόντων (στην προκειμένη περίπτωση τηλεοπτικών προγραμμάτων). Σύμφωνα με τους οικονομολόγους αυτούς σε ολιγοπωλιστικές αγορές των μέσων υπάρχουν οι οικονομικοί πόροι για να δοκιμαστούν διαφορετικά προϊόντα, να αναπτυχθούν και να εξαργυρωθεί το κόστος της καινοτομίας από την ανταπόκριση των καταναλωτών- τηλεθεατών. Αντίθετα, μια άλλη μερίδα οικονομολόγων των μέσων ισχυρίζεται ότι όταν λίγες εταιρείες κυριαρχούν σε μια αγορά, δεν έχουν το κίνητρο για να καινοτομήσουν, εφόσον στόχος τους είναι η κατασκευή προίόντων που ικανοποιούν όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερους καταναλωτές, με το μικρότερο δυνατό κόστος, κάτι που οδηγεί σε ***ομογενοποίηση των προϊόντων*** και λιγότερη ποικιλία.
