Στην εποχή της πολυπλοκότητας και της ταχύτητας, η πρόσβαση των πολιτών στην πληροφορία και τη γνώση αποτελεί, δίχως άλλο, ***αναγκαίο όρο*** για την ικανότητά τους να κατανοούν τα βασικά ποιοτικά χαρακτηριστικά του νέου περιβάλλοντας και να προσανατολίζονται σε ατομικό και συλλογικό επίπεδο απέναντι στα πολυσύνθετα οικονομικά και κοινωνικά φαινόμενα που καθορίζουν τη ζωή τους. Μια τέτοια ικανότητα προσανατολισμού δεν παρουσιάζει απλώς θεωρητικό ενδιαφέρον, αλλά αποτελεί προϋπόθεση της αυτόνομης συμμετοχής των πολιτών στις εξελίξεις και της αποτελεσματικής άσκησης των δημοκρατικών τους δικαιωμάτων. Αυτό αντικρούεται με τις επιχειρηματικές επιλογές των εταιρειών των μέσων και συνθέτοντας αυτές τις δύο διαστάσεις, δηλαδή από τη μια το δικαίωμα στην παροχή του αγαθού της πολυμέρειας στους πολίτες και από την άλλη στην διαχείριση της πολυμέρειας από τους καναλάρχες για σκοπούς κερδοφορίας, αυτό δημιουργεί από μόνο του μια βασική αντίφαση και δύο ξεχωριστές κατευθύνσεις μελέτης του ζητήματος.
