"Βρε, τον παλιο-παγαπόντη!" Είπε ο Γάτος κι έξυσε με την άκρη του νυχιού του τη ράχη του καναπέ. Ένα ξέφτι πήγε κι αγκυλώθηκε ανάμεσα στα δυο του δάχτυλα, τον ταλαιπώρησε μέχρι να το ξεμπερδέψει, τον νευρίασε.
"Δεν ζητάω βέβαια και πολλά, ζητάω;..", παραπονέθηκε και πήδηξε αθόρυβα στη μοκέτα.
Ξεφύσηξε φουρκισμένος, παρ' όλ' αυτά φόρεσε την πιο χαδιάρα μάσκα του, σήκωσε τα μουστάκια ψηλά τάχα πως χαμογελάει και κίνησε νωχελικά και χωρίς βιάση για τα πόδια του αφεντικού του. Πέρασε ανάμεσα, προσέχοντας με πάσα διπλωματία ώστε το κεφάλι του να τριφτεί στο αριστερό πόδι κι η ουρά στο δεξί, ύστερα καμπούριασε τη ράχη κι αφράτεψε τη γούνα του.

I've included a lot of extra text in order to give an idea of the style of the piece etc. The cat is quite 'human' in the story, so translations not normally appropriate to animals are appropriate.

I agree with Epameinondas that the phrase works as a whole.

Here's my suggestion, though you may think of something better than "real pain".

"a nightmare to untangle" is probably too strong.
