Babiniotis and the Oxford Dictionary write, I personally think that, ‘And the dutiful generosity’, describes what the author of Ioanna’s text is saying, in English.

The main reason why I do not agree with you today is because you appear to feel that ‘φιλότιμο’ has nothing to do with 'duty'. 2. I did not say that I thought that Eleni's answer was better than mine, nor do I think that it is, I merely agreed with it, out of a sense of φιλότιμο, if you like. 3. And I do agree with Philip, but explained my reasons for having restricted my answer to four words. I would also like to clarify here that I agree with Philip in the same way that I agree with Eleni. I agree that Philip’s modification of what I wrote half way through my answer improves what I wrote there and provides an excellent and possibly better alternative to the answer that I provided. You believe Eleni's answer is more correct than yours, and then, 3. 'And I would agree with Philip entirely for modifying my answer in the way he suggests'.
And I would agree with Philip entirely for modifying my answer in the way he suggests, but would like to add that I also preferred not to use too many words in my answer so as to keep the translation of the three word text which includes the word ‘φιλότιμο’ as close as possible in length with the source. But, ‘And the sense of honour and duty’, is not much longer.
Although no simple phrase can convey the full meaning, I like Peter's phrase "a sense of duty or honour" (about halfway through his answer), but I would modify it slightly: a sense of honour and duty.
Transphy, with respect, you only read the first three and a half lines of my discussion entry of 09:14, but did not continue to read the second half of the fourth line and the beginning of the fifth line. In the second half of the fourth line and the beginning of the fifth line, I mentioned that G. Babiniotis also describes ‘φιλότιμο’ to mean, ‘η προθυμία στην εκτέλεση εντολής, καθήκοντος, κ.λ.π.’. Need I remind you of the fact that one of the most common interpretations of the word ‘καθήκον’ is ‘duty’? Also, Ioanna was asking for a translation of ‘φιλότιμο’ as it fits in this particular context, and the aspect of ‘generosity’ being the ‘καθήκον’ or ‘the thing that is being done right’ is borne out by the context of Ioanna’s particular passage.

It is an, 'intense consciousness of personal honour and dignity'. It does not refer to 'generosity', either abstract or material. Generosity can be part of an action by a possessor of 'φιλότιμο', and it is the 'effect', not the 'cause'. The cause being the possessing of the attribute of 'φιλότιμο'. This 'attribute' is not 'duty' bound, it is not expressed because it is the 'duty' of the possessor of ' φιλότιμο', to do so, but because of their inwardly possessed willingness (προθυμία) to effect an intense act of personal honour and dignity. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personally, I believe, Bambiniotis beats all our suggestions. I, therefore propose that:- φιλότιμο= 'intense consciousness of personal honour and dignity'.
