Acutally it is the mass of earth rather than weight which has been described in the example of bbc given by the asker. In that particular para, the actual mass of earth has been decribed.

You see the sentence given in the para quoted is -पृथ्वी का वज़न जानने के बजाय यह पूछना बेहतर होगा कि पृथ्वी का द्रव्यमान क्या है, here पृथ्वी का द्रव्यमान means the mass of earth in scientific terms.
