a polgárosodás lényege main idea of the transition to citizenship Explanation: Amennyiben valóban a folyamatról van szó (polgárosodás lényege), akkor ezt használmám. Ha mégsem, akkor: "main idea of citizenship" (polgáriság lényege). Szokás szerint nem egyértelmű, hogy miről beszélnek a politikusok. Persze lehet essence of... very idea of... stb. |

joining the middle class/achieving middle-class status Explanation: Here I think is a natural sounding alternative. But I also like "achieving middle-class status" in this particular context. You could say "the essence of achieving middle-class status". -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2008-10-07 14:00:49 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- And for the other option you could "the essence of joining the middle class". |

upwardly mobile Explanation: Reflects the aspiration for wealth and status, including the effort and self-motivation to achieve this. Can be both negatively and positively perceived. Of course the underlying complications of reflecting the Hungarian distinction of polgár-polgári isn't so easy to achieve in a simple phrase. Example sentence(s):
