Indonesian term or phrase: moskovis kukus
This is the name of a kind of cake at the head of a recipe. I presume that "kukus" refers to steaming rather than baking. And, just guessing, the "moskovis" is either Moscow or Muscovite. Does anyone know if there is a standard English equivalent for this" I have done a bit of research but have not come up with anything. If not, then how might it be translated into English. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you for your very helpful answer. It did not occur to me that "moskovis" might be a Dutch word. I did a bit of research and found the expression "muscovite cake" but it is very rare in English and is mostly used metaphorically to mean a "russian layer cake". I have checked out what you said and it appears that the Dutch spelling of the word is actually "moskovisch" which probably does mean "muscovite" -- though I will have to check that out, too.

Layer cake (Moscovis)

Explanation:
It's derived from the Dutch "Moscovis", which is spiced with cinnamon flavor. The cake is formed from compressed layers of various-flavored thin cakes.

Layer cake is known as MOSCOVIS in Dutch, i.e. its origin. In Malay it is called "Kek Lapis". Layer Cake is baked with many thin layers make up to a variety of flavours. The original taste from Holland is spiced with cinnamon flavour.

Steamed Moscovis

Explanation:
Moscovis = Layer cake with dried fruit

On several recipes I read the cake named Moscovis is a layer cake, but what makes it different with other layer cakes is that it uses dried fruit (such as: prune, raisin) sprinkled in the dough.

Kukus means 'steam'

Cakes are mostly baked, but most bakers (I guess) lately came up with some new inventions, with the steaming technique. Such as for 'brownies', we know the name 'brownies kukus' (steamed brownies).
