Ikhlas di sini adalah ikhlas melepas kepergian, tidak menyisakan dendam atau kerinduan (reservation). Memang terjemahan jadi panjang. Ini karena dalam bahasa Indonesia, orang Indonesia mudah menduga apanya yang diikhlaskan itu. Namun, IMHO, hal yang sama mungkin tak terjadi ketika orang asing membaca padanan langsung ikhlas (wholeheartedly, genuinely, dkk.) (= menimbulkan tanyaan semacam apanya yang wholeheartedly?)

I like Erich's explanation but I offer an alternative from Howard M. Federspiel: A Dictionary of Indonesian Islam.
He has, for Ikhlas: Absolute devotion to God in religious faith, practice and action. Ikhlas is often used as a contrast to disbelief (shirk).
A Christian prayer in the same circumstances begins -
"Give courage and faith to those who are bereaved ...."
