It should be read "Tapi bila bersungguh-sungguh mencari orang-orang seperti Pa Mayan Surbakti" because the previous sentence is "Orang-orang seperti Pa Mayan Surbakti mungkin sangat sulit ditemukan kini". Then, the translation of the clause "Tapi bila bersungguh-sungguh, masih ada satu dua orang pendekar tua yang tak bisa ...." should be "However, if one searches them seriously, there remains one or two old warriors who cannot ...." |

Explanation: Pendekar is someone of high skill in martial arts. The closest English equivalent is a master. Pendekar tua may refer to age as well as years of experience. I believe it refers more to the latter, wherefore the word veteran will suit the meaning. Now, what about bersungguh-sungguh? It is an adverb, more or less seriously in English. What is it to be done seriously? The Indonesian text does not give an explicit verb, but by inferring from the previous sentence, it is clear that we have to be serious in finding --in looking for-- a master like Mr. Surbakti. |

But, if you search far and wide, you might find one or two old silat masters, with their disciples in remote areas, who would not care less to impose the rigorous martial art practice, even onto the lazy students. Without knowing what is so special about Pa Mayan Surbakti, I could not guess, what tak bisa melenting is all about. Could it be, no longer able to prance with elastic body or, no longer mad with the students who do not practice Hope, this can be of any help. :) noreference |
