I think this might work. Custard certainly makes more sense without the "egg" prefix. I still think it sounds a bit more US than UK but maybe that's not relevant. Custard would certainly convey the idea of yellow. I think to be safest it might be best to use custard-flavoured ice cream as custard has such a specific consistency and might have strange connotations to those of us brought up on gloopy, lumpy British school custard!

panna is whipped cream, snow-white. So... I'd say no.

The word cremolati or creme in Italy refers to all those icecream flavours that do not contain FRUIT (cioccolato crema malaga etc).

Here we have the white ice-cream (fiordilatte or panna) and the yellow ice-cream (vaniglia or crema). Would "lemon-flavored custard ice-cream" or "vanilla-flavored custard ice-cream" (http://www.google.it/search?hl=it&source=hp&biw=1271&bih=893...
mean something to an English ear, Laura? I know that custard is made with nutmeg or even cinnamon, but "crema" can be lemon-flavored, vanilla flavored or even almon flavored. "Cream" as a flavor would simply mean "panna" in my opinion. So I would simply try the "custard ice-cream" option.

aridaje co' sta vaniglia....(Roman dialect).... cream is cream. Made with milk, perhaps some vanilla I am not an ice-scream maker, but in Italy we've got the vaniglia flavour when we want vanilla.

I think Cristina is right that French Vanilla means a lot to an American ear but I'm not sure about British English - I guess it depends on your intended audience! I think gelato is a word that has transferred to US English but not to UK English, ice cream would still be the "catch-all". Who knew ice cream could be such a complicated topic!

I once took an American colleague to an ice-cream parlor here in Italy to try our "gelato" and he chose "fiordilatte and crema" commenting "oh, yes, vanilla and French vanilla" and describing the difference beteween the two, i.e. the egg yolks. Now I don't know if an English colleague would have said the same, but this is my guess...

I found a translation of this as egg-custard flavour but that doesn't convince me! http://www.italylogue.com/food-drink/italian-gelato-flavors-... I think Vanilla might be a safer bet on this occasion - I know Crema doesn't really mean vanilla but it's the closest translation that would mean something to an English native speaker. Interesting! HTH.
