Very true Phil, but I do not think using the correct fish name in the English version, with the Italian version right next to it, would make it an unusable recipe, even if it is a slightly unusual fish for an English person, especially as they are likely to be living in Sicily if they read this magazine and therefore have quite likely come across it before. And I don't think the correct translation, red scorpionfish, is so unusual. Besides, if I do what you suggest with that fish, I would have to do it with more than half the others in the list, as they are mostly local fish, not available in England for instance, which would put the word count way, way over. In the articles I often do put the Italian word next to the English in the translation, as a way of 'teaching' local culture, but I think in this case it works just as well like this.

Phil - under normal circumstances I would have done that, it's an excellent way of dealing with such a situation. However, in this case the magazine is also a bi-lingual magazine, so the original article (with the Italian names) is right there next to the translation. This allows the translation to also serve as a learning base for who wants it, either for the EN>IT or the IT>EN, so I always try to get the names etc as accurate as humanly possible in translation.

That puts a whole different complexion on it! It sounds like it's too late if you've sent the job back, but your translation should be targeted specifically at English-speaking readers shopping in Italy. Knowing that it means red band fish (or whatever) isn't going to help them find it in supermarkets. I would have thought it would be better to leave it in Italian, with a translation (if you can find a definitive answer) in brackets.

La dizione cipolla è prettamente dialetto trapanese, nemmeno siciliano in genere. In italiano, si chiama "scorfano rosso", pertanto red scorpionfish va bene.

Phil - unfortunately this text is for an Italian market, whether they be English speaking or Italian speaking, as the magazine it is for is only published in Italy, in fact I believe only in Sicily. So using ingredients that an English market might use is not a possibility here, unfortunately.

If this were a zoology text rather than a recipe, I think getting the exact species and Latin name would be more important.
If your translation is for the UK, you should be listing fish that are easily available in UK supermarkets. I would look for similar recipes in English to see what they suggest. The first Google hit for "Sicilian fish soup" is by Jamie Oliver, and he has salmon and halibut.

Hi VMeneghin, from what I have understood, the Blackbelly Rosefish is a type of Rockfish (http://fishbase.sinica.edu.tw/summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=... so I think I am ok using it, even if I have never heard of such a fish in English! Certainly it's very uncommon in the UK, while very well-known in Sicily.

Here you can see the picture, the Latin name of the fish (CEPULA RUBESCENS) and the English translation, which is the red band fish. And it mentions it lives in the Mediterranean.

Hi Anthony, unfortunately not...I can only really go by memory as to what it looks like, as I have seen my mother-in-law cook it many times for her couscous, but to be honest, each time she cooked it, it was with 2-3 others, and so I have no idea which was which. Sorry I can't be more help on the image front. The only thing I do know is that it is definitely not long and thin.

the website you mentioned is contradictory, as it claims the cipolla is on the right but then says it has no spines ... only one of those can be true. Can you shed any light as to which?

I believe, cipolla stands for onion with no... gills nor fins ;)
