Restaurant menu: "jumped beans", pizza with "escapes" (scampi). On the back of a Rome city bus: Driven tours! In the market: fruit and vegetals. It is both amusing and sad.

a Canadian friend who had been too long in Italy once said, à propos of some people who were going to be late for dinner, "they'll have to arrange themselves". And what about the guy who opened a bar near where I lived and, to be cool, put up a big sign saying SNATCH BAR (much to the amusement of passing anglophones). The sign was taken down some time later.

Right - but the list is long... (remember "false friends" dictionaries?)
Meanwhile Italian words are sneaking into the English language - especially regarding food (yum) and rightly so.
The list is long and at times very amusing - "I like you a sack", a book was written about it.

You are right Fiona. English words are "cool" in Italian but often used with a mistaken meaning. Italian has maybe 10 beautiful words to describe 1 pragmatic English word. The Italian language should be kept alive!

I agree with you Helen - why? OTOH, I've stopped asking myself why certain expressions sneak into Italian. Maybe it was a space issue, or they just thought it sounded "cool". Also agree with Phil - given the context, it can't really be anything else.
