Reference: Sarah, Reference information: as you see from the image, the "pietra di Bismantova" is a rigid sandstone block (what is left of a larger sandstone formation): at its base, there is a steep band that, in turn, rests on shaly successions characterized by softer forms. The limit between the latter two is sharp, not gradual. Of course you will find a better way to say it, but this is the meaning.
