This is World War One related and it cannot be a weapon. Any ideas?

Evidently the man with a sledgehammer and the one with a "pistoletto" work together to drill holes in the rock.

Forgot it! The next step would probably be to stick some explosive into the holes to demolish the hardest rock into smaller pieces, which the rest of the team will manage with different tools.
