Italian term or phrase: contratto di inserimento
Hello everyone,
I am translating an article on how to reform the Italian 3 year degree system.
Here is quite a long passage, to give you an idea. I understand it is some sort of starting contract...? there is a German translation, but it is of little use to me. Thank you!

English translation:contract of employment
Explanation:
I think this just means that the young graduate is to be "inserted" (i.e. incorporated) into the workforce as a normal employee.

contratto unico di inserimento
single first employment contract

Explanation:
"inserimento" means first job. However the reference is to a parliamentary bill made by the democratic party, which basically replaces a previous apprentice type employment contract. So it woudl be best to add "single", since it is a reference to a very Italy specific contract.

"LA PROPOSTA DI LEGGE MADIA PER IL “CONTRATTO UNICO DI INSERIMENTO FORMATIVO”

IL PROGETTO PRESENTATO DA UN GRUPPO DI DEPUTATI DEL PD, RIPRODUCE SOSTANZIALMENTE L’ESPERIENZA DEL “CONTRATTO DI FORMAZIONE E LAVORO” PRECEDENTE ALLA LEGGE BIAGI, " (sorry for the caps moderators, a copy and paste)

@Phil In this case it is an abbreviation of "contratto unico di inserimento formativo" so it means (or rather is) a standard training contract (with no others, no apprenticeship) for people starting on their first job. As it is used in this context, it is just a label a reference to a proposed parliamentary bill, so a literal translation would allow a reader to trace the origins, which contain the full meaning.

neutral  philgoddard: Good answer, but I'm not sure "single" really explains what "unico" means. Isn't it something along the lines of a standard statutory contract?

three-year study-internship contract

Explanation:
This is of course a free translation but gets across the essential point, that this is an internship, but it is also and only for people studying at the same time (in fact uni credits are gained for both actual study and for work). I would translate it like this

sorry, just 'study-internship contract', as the three-years is specified again in the same sentence.
