'Il 2015 è stato l’anno di un primo bilancio' - the sentence then lists the successes of 2015 (number of women and children saved and treated)

It is taken from a report of an NGO that introduced a campaign in 2015 to support mothers and children.

Do I have to use 'first budget' here or can I say something like: In 2015, its first financial year, x mothers saved, x children treated'?

to me means something like...

At the end of the first year, 2015, it was time to weigh up the results/take stock/to evaluate our work.

I'm pretty sure that here primo bilancio is not used in its financial sense but in the wider one which 'fare un bilancio' which means to weigh up, to evaluate something, in order to get the full picture or see how things have gone so far. This would also be corroborated by the wording of the phrase and by the use of the article 'un' which would not be correct if we were talking about 'the first financial year' = IL primo bilancio

agree  James (Jim) Davis: I don't think "initial" does it, a whole year has gone by so this is the "first true assessment" an initial one might be at the end of the first quarter. // Yes but I think first is better cos its more incisive primo vs iniziale?
