-------------------------------------------------- Note added at 19 mins (2006-11-23 18:25:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- mi e' venuto in mente adesso... to stoke (up) the fire |

raise the stakes / step up the pressure Explanation: That's the gist of it, depending on context. It's a difficult one to translate, since it refers to an Italian card game (briscola) with 4 players, where you play with a partner sitting in front of you. Aces are worth 11 points, which is the maximum you can get. Now, if you lay an ace, the game gets more interesting and more pressure is put on all the players to get all the cards and win the hand. Hope it's not too confusing. ;-) |

mettere il carico da undici to lay it on thick/to pile it on Explanation: metterci il carico da undici (dal gioco della briscola) significa rincarare la dose, esagerare... a me viene in mente: "to lay it on thick" o "to pile it on" ciaooo! g |

Played the trump card Explanation: It's a well known saying that means (in both senses) laying a card held in reserve for a winning trick. Example sentence(s):
