public space of certain diasporas Explanation: ...Pnina Werbner reveals a multi-centered world among Manchester Pakistanis, a locally created ****diasporic public space**** that appropriates and combines traveling ideas and images from a variety of sources into meaningful moral allegories. public arena ... Explanation: Diasporas isn't going to work in this context - so I suggest a using a verb instead. I find I often need to be a bit creative when translating this sort of thing - English doesn't lend itself to such abstractions as well as Italian does. How about: A modernity, that is, which presents itself as the public arena in which many emotions are conveyed, including terror and despair, but also hope. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 46 mins (2004-11-28 17:27:08 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I\'m not an anthropologist - maybe they say this sort of thing... In which case, given Neva\'s useful link, I\'d suggest \"A modernity, that is, which presents itself as a diasporic public space where terror and despair, and also hope, are found.\" These are only suggestions - and you\'ll have to decide how much anthropological jargon to include in a journalistic text, depending on where it\'ll be published. |
