HI all -

I have never seen this word used in this context and am wondering if anyone can tell me how best to translate it.

The broader context is that what is being presented in court is a PowerPoint slide show with many tables of financial data that is being analyzed and contested by one of the parties.

Here's the paragraph in which "cappello" found:

Thanks for any help!

neutral  bluenoric: using "parties" here is misleading, as the "different hats" are about the distinction between a consultant and a witness

these are two different roles

Explanation:
Maybe something like this could work in your context if you don't want to go for a literal translation.

To play a role/to wear a/the hat have a similar meaning

It's unclear from your context whether these "hats" are on the head of one person (at different times) or two.
