USA: MOTION for a RETURN DATE
Explanation:
Motions are, contrary to popular myth, also used in the UK.

This, paradoxically for England & Wales where 'writs are returnable: returned as served: on such or such a date', is a USA variation on Phil G's theme.

Note that a 'return date motion' is not the same thing and means the date on which the application is to be heard ! Nothing to do with 'restitution' of property - see the second ProZ weblink.

neutral  Adrian MM.: legally inaccurate as usual: it's not an application for a hearing generally, but to list a hearing date. // Motion is, as I mentioned, more US-Am., plus your comments on others' questions asked & on Anglo-Am. legal drafting techniques are true to form.

neutral  philgoddard: I don't see how this is different to my plain-English version. I've been translating legal documents for decades, and I've never heard of a return date. And if it's US terminology, I'm sure Enrica will prefer UK.

-> Well, you again . and ostensibly others - have learned something used in actual legal practis/ce, besides which motion is also usable for UK consumption.
