Then feminists were considered political fanatic extremists. What was an extreme viewpoint then is now normal in UK. Wisecracks about a woman's place and the kitchen generate little more than perplexed raised eyebrows and women don't need to resort to violence, they just leave miscreants at the bottom of the promotion ladder, which, quite honestly is probably where they deserve to be.

So I take it that you fear bottles on the noggin :) I get your point, and U.S. feminists can feel rather strong about these issues. It is always sort of a land mine situation. Strunk and White would cry buckets over this debate :)

"Never encountered a case where this was an issue" people often say nothing, but just think. Urban myth has it that militant feminists at Essex University in the 1970s would break a bottle over the back of a male student's head if one of them inadvertently opened a door for a female student. These victims never noticed the issue either. Since then I have always taken a proactive approach ;-).

i wish to comment of James's observation on craftsmanship and on the fact that the crafter/artisan might be a female. I have never encountered a case where this was an issue, and was wondering if anyone has. Might be a good forum post. It's kind of like stating "their" instead of "he" for third party singulars in contracts and writing in general, with the admission that this sounds clumsy. I draw inspiration from White and Strunk on this issue, but then again wouldn't want to be accused of being a patriarch.
