Se da una parte occorre presentare chiaramente il “che cosa” della novità, il tono complessivo della comunicazione può concedersi di essere sensazionalistico, enfatico, nella misura in cui si vuole presentare un prodotto che effettivamente crea uno iato, uno scarto qualitativo, rispetto ai suoi concorrenti, e pare prefigurare una nuova categoria di prodotto.

In the first instance could they mean something like "distinguishing feature"?? In the second I've put a "leap in quality" What do you think? Thanks.

For the first one, just "advantage" is sufficient, for the second one "a difference, puts it ahead of its competitors" where "difference" translates "iato". I think that you have to translate the whole sentence here. If you focus on "scarto" too much you will end up with something unnatural. The first thing that comes into mind is "gap" but I can't work it in here.
