la discussion che precede è solo "slittata" in alto dopo che - come avrai notato - anch'io ho tolto gran parte delle mie entry, come fatto dagli altri, ma è del 24 aprile scorso.
Questa non l'ho tolta perché esprime un mio parere sulla trad medica, basato sulla mia esperienza di lavoro insieme a ricercatori scientifici nell'ambito delle pubblicazioni mediche in letteratura, che credo possa essere di utilità al forum in generale.
Non intendevo perciò riaprire oggi nessun dibattito al riguardo. Buona giornata a tutti.

p.s. I am sure qualified MDs are aware of not knowing everything but let's face it we cannot put ourselves on the same pedestal, but we can learn from them, and perhaps too they learn from "linguists", but hey, let us not pretend we are equals.

Whatever you say, it is about respect for each other and any native English speaker knows that the English language is diverse and flexible and there are often various ways of translating one word into English. Native English MDs know this more than anybody and we should respect this. They are the experts in medical terminology and we need to learn from them and respect them.

i 'qualified MDs' non sono specializzati in tutte le (diversissime) branche della medicina, ovviamente, e si attengono in genere alla propria, esercitando la professione di medico, di solito... Invece, gli articoli specialistici pubblicati in letteratura medica da medici ricercatori in particolari settori, anche se nn madrelingua (visto che il paper **deve** obbligatoriamente essere sottoposto a rev linguistica 'native' e poi essere accettato dai reviewer per la pubblicazione), sono in grado di offrire lo standard linguistico *ufficiale* - incontestabile - per ogni data branca, ed è pertanto fondamentalmente a loro che un traduttore medico deve fare riferimento...

Refs madrelingua: J MULLER - "...inflammatory **paradontopathy**..." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/13076122 e "...The first sign of **paradontopathy** is the inflammation of the gingiva...", anche se non è il termine più diffuso o da preferirsi necessariamente.
Resta l'errata definizione di "para" e 'pathy', da cui mi sembra fosse partita la ('inane') discussion...

"para" non significa affatto "several", e 'pathy' non deriva da 'pathology' (casomai sarebbe il contrario), ma dal greco "páthos"...

That seems to be the problem, i think that if you are translating an insurance policy you should use the latin term (because even english medical terms come from latin) as long as it's correct (it is in this case).
If you go to see the doctor he will probably say "paradontal disease, or even gum disease" just to make the word easier to the patient.
i'm sorry but this is my point of view, and what i used to hear every day at the Hospital..... so, parodontopathy or peridontal disease, but not gum disease..
Anyway...happy Easter everyone :)

No really I don't do medical stuff at all and my dictionaries are too generic and I couldn't find any decent translation online.... Blah Blah blah ... Thanks ;-)
