I don't think it's part of a clinical trial - though I don't have the full report. I actually think it might be Luigi's suggestion of 'personale infermieristico' as the patient had been on the ward for some time and then the duty doctor was called because the patient was 'non conttatabile' i.e. had slipped into coma

Just a thought: If this report is part of a Serious Adverse Event report in a clinical trial, PI could also be Principal Investigator. I often translate reports (or used to ... when job offers were much more frequent) of chart notes of clinical trial subjects where the principal investigator reports that they could not contact the patient, and the efforts they make to contact the patient, and why the patient could not be contacted etc. This is what they have to do with their clinical trial subjects. Depends on the larger context here, what the overall report is about.
